Snowy Days

We went to bed Saturday night in the midst of a thunderstorm, and woke up Sunday morning to a fresh, fluffy and beautiful dusting of snow.

At first it wasn't very much but it continues to snow all day Sunday that by the afternoon we had a pretty thick coating of snow.

The kids could hardly contain themselves.  They have been asking and asking for snow around Christmas time, but it typically doesn't snow here.

We spend the morning inside watching the blizzard raging outside from windows and doors.

Millie wasn't to thrilled about this storm.

The kids played with their regular favourite toys, while Nate and I sipped on coffee and tea, and cooked up a storm.

Homemade chicken nuggets are the best, and oh so easy to make.

We convinced the kids that in order to play in the snow we all needed a nap, so we would have the energy run and play and withstand the wind - it worked! We napped - score one for Nate and I.

After the nap the game was on.  We gathered all our warm weather gear (it has sadly diminished after leaving Germany and moving to Texas) and out the door we went.

At first they had no idea what to think.... It reminds me of our frozen wonderland last year, at least we can play in it this year.

It took them a minute to warm up to the idea, and then the game was on.  It was full on running, rolling, and throwing snow.  With giggles, and squeals. Full force.

Even Millie joined us outside,  but she just stayed in the clubhouse, hiding from the wind.

It was really super cold.  Hayleigh lasted about fifteen minutes and she was done, she had enough.  So in we came the two us, peeling off snow soaked layers for clothing and dunking her in a warm bath.

Nate and Ian in the other hand stayed outside, went on a little adventure to the duck pond, and created snowflake, our very own little snowman.

Ian finally had enough as well, I can't believe he stayed out there as long as he did.  Warm bath, warm jammies, we cranked up the heater and made hot chocolate with a side of European chocolate cookies.

Puzzles and yummies, to top of a fabulous snowy day.

The kids were ready for bed, and passed out without any trouble, it was amazing.  Thank you snow.

The bad weather continued into Monday - so one of the perks of having grandparents in town - when the kids need a change of scenery before going stir crazy - off they go.

I will admit I have been grateful for the occasions the kids go and visit Nate's parents for an afternoon or the day.  It is little luxury we didn't really have in Germany.

And it has been nice to spend some extra time with Nate, where we can lounge around, make yummy food, and watch movies (that we normally don't have time to watch) so that is exactly what we did.

Homemade pizza, followed by eggnog milkshake.

We used this recipe for the dough and sauce.

We used this recipe for the milkshake.

It has been a great two days of being "snowed in" and spending some much needed time together just playing and relaxing, and thinking about our life and time here in Texas.

The town is slowly but surely starting to emerge from the blizzard.

I am taking the last two days of 2015 to reflect on the past year, and everything that has happened, and planning for the new year, with grace and self-care for our family.

Happy snow day!
