Strawberry Picking

Yesterday after running a ton of errands and that included the weekly grocery trip, we decided that is the perfect that to go and pick strawberries, and indeed it was perfect.

In my head I feel like it is crunch time, do as much as you can in as little time as we have left here in Germany, and sometimes  that thought is super overwhelming and other times it is filled with the sense of adventure and excitement.

Yesterday was perfect.  My kids are strawberry babies, just like almost every other kid that I have ever met.  We love strawberries, and picking them yourself is ever better.  It is also another great way to involve kids to make healthy eating choices.

At the beginning Ian had to freak out, of course my little boy had to yell at the top of his lungs "I afraid of strawberry, strawberry is scary," and I thought great it's over we are going to have to leave.  But then magical after a few minutes I managed to convince him that he will find the biggest and brightest red strawberry ever if he just goes into the field and look for it.  And sure enough, he found it, and it was over, and he went crazy picking strawberries and finding the best ones.

I really had so much fun with the kids, and it was kind of the perfect atmosphere, because little miss I have no ears could go wild and basically do whatever she wanted without disturbing anyone and I didn't have to yell at her.  It was in my books, I freaken miracle.  I loved setting out on an adventure with the, walking in between the rows of strawberry plants and just seeing hundreds and hundreds of strawberries, not knowing where to begin to pick them, but strangely not feeling overwhelmed.

These we the juiciest and sweetest strawberries I have had in a long time.  Some members of the family could not wait until we got home to try out these red beauties, and indulged in strawberries right in the field.  Hayleigh could not contain herself and before we knew it she was devouring everything in sight, with a big smile on her face.  Ian is a rule follower to a point, and refused to eat any until we weighed them, paid for them and made it home.

We picked almost 5kg worth of strawberries, so guess what we will be eating for the next week.  No actually as of this morning there is nothing left.  I made batch of jam, and the rest of have been eaten with meals.  Ian has also informed me this morning that we will have to return to the strawberry field, and I have no objections.

I am trying my first round of jam making, and was so grateful for my grandma's advice when I called her yesterday.  I am happy to say that my jam has set successfully, and I will be sharing the recipe soon.  Thanks ouma, I love you!!

I love summer here in Germany, and all the beauty and colors that accompanies it.  I am determined to make our last summer here, the most beautiful.

Happy weekend, go do something fun!
