Our First Week at the Beach House

After twelve hours in the car we finally made it to the beach house.  A beautiful secluded little village of the eastern cape coast of South Africa called Cannon Rocks.  I didn’t document our road trip, all we wanted to do was get out of the car…..

WARNING! This will be a photo overload.

Cannon Rocks is my happy place.  I have some of my best childhood memories on this coast, and I was so happy to finally initiate Hayleigh into the beach house club.

We have been so blessed with gorgeous weather all week, and I am so grateful.  We spent most mornings on the beach, playing in the sun, picking up shells, catching rock fish, swimming, building sand castles, and walking.

Well hello needle fish!

The first morning that we went to the beach was so exciting.  I felt all giddy, because I had no idea how the kids would react.  I thought Hayleigh would love it and that Ian would be a hot mess.  It was the opposite; Hayleigh didn't want anything to do with the water, sand, or shells.  She ended up falling on me while I was picking up shells.  Ian on the other hand was completely sucked into the waves, and it was a real mission to convince him to go home for lunch.

I love watching my little people explore and discover, it is such a joy to see their sweet reactions, especially when intrigued.  The natural life in the sea, and forest is absolutely amazing, and everyday delivers something amazing, from hermit crabs, to monkeys In our front yard.

We spent most mornings on the beach with my parents, entertaining the kids with fun activities and discoveries, and teaching them about nature.  My mom did such a phenomenal job teaching my brother and I, that I want to instill that in my kids.  Watching my mom teach her grandbabies the same way, is so such a beautiful sight, and it makes my heart so happy.  I know I have said this before, but I love my mama.
We come home for lunch and then naps, the kids have been taking amazing naps – thank you sea air.  After nap we generally return to the beach for more beach adventure.  We have collected a few shells, and shell hunting is one of our favourite activities.  My dad on the other hand is a master at anything to do with sand, and watching him dig holes, build tracks, and sandcastles is really fun.

Evenings we generally hang out with my grandparents and a glass of wine after the kids go to bed.  I won’t lie, we usually go to bed way early, since we are all exhausted after all our walks and activities.
I finally managed to ease Hayleigh into the shallow pond to play, and I think she only like it because she could smear sand all over my legs, it was such nice scrub and my legs were silky smooth after.  I do wish she would warm up the sea a little bit more… she is such a snuggle bug, all she wants is so be held, and carrying her little butt all over the beach and sand dunes can be really exhausting.

I can’t believe that our first week is already over; it is going by way to fast.  I love all the fresh air, sunshine, and no internet, phones, and minimum TV.  It is refreshing to find other means of entertainment like readying, catching up with my grandparents, taking afternoon naps, researching beach finds in actual books.
I am so excited tomorrow my brother, his sweet and beautiful wife, and two cute puppies will be joining us for a couple of days.  I saw the last when Ian was a year old, and still have to meet Hayleigh.  We will be celebrating Easter a week early with them as well.

I am loving the sea.

Happy Friday.
