Friend & Family Reunion

A new tradition was created a few years back when Nate and I came home to South Africa for a visit.  My parents decided that fastest and most effective way to see all our friends and family would be to have a small get together and invite everyone at the same time.  This is how the “spitbraai” tradition was born.

And like every year before, this year delivered even though some family members could not make it.  The morning started with a whirlwind, getting everything together, cleaning chairs, preparing food, putting out plates, and doing all the things you do for a dinner party, just with the added stress of catering for about forty people.

Everything went smoothly, and by the time the first people showed up everything was ready and good to go.  All we had to do was pour drinks, and then hang out, catch up, and have a great time.
I was so happy to see everyone, and to finally introduce Hayleigh, this is here first time in South Africa.  She was such a hit, and our little entertainer.  I am happy to say that she fit right in that everyone loved her.
Ian has grown so much since the last time everyone saw him, and most people were shocked about hoe much he has changed and grown up.  The most exciting time of the day for Ian was when my godparents showed up with their grandson, Keegan, and they are the same age.  It was the best to watch them play and figure it out, they could not talk and understand each other due to language barriers but everyone speaks the universal language of play.  It was so sweet to watch my little boy open up and play his heart out.
We had great company, drinks, and delicious food.  My parents did such an amazing job preparing and cooking all the food.  I finally had my little sheep tail, I wait for that every time I come home, and it was delicious!!!

It was a beautiful day and it turned into an even more beautiful evening, the kids were exhausted and went to bed early, and that gave Nate and I a chance to really hangout with everyone uninterrupted (we didn’t have to worry about sticky hands, filling up sippy cups, changing diapers, reminding Ian to go pee etc,) and I love that part as well.  Don’t get me wrong, I love and adore my kids so much, but sometime it is so refreshing to have an adult conversation, and this time we were surrounded by adults from every angle, and I loved it.  There is something relaxing about being outside under the starry skies, with a bowl of dessert, and some coffee, and fun company.

I am so thankful for everyone taking time out of their busy schedules to come out and see us, and to catch up on life.  Our little family felt blessed and loved.  These memories will be stored away for years to come.

Today was a long and busy day as we prepare to head to the beach house.  We went to bed so late, I am not use to going to bed that late anymore, and cleaning up the house, and packing is so exhausting.  At least we managed to sneak away for a late lunch at Ocean Basket – Nate and I love our seafood and just like every time before it delivered, pure goodness and I will miss it in Germany.  We only get descent seafood when we travel to more coastal places and towns.

We will be heading to the beach house tomorrow, and will be off the grid for the next three weeks, I will still write posts, but will only be able to publish it once we return home and have internet.

Three weeks without internet, phone, and minimal tv sounds so refreshing right now.  I am excited to finish  the two books I have left, early morning strolls on the beach, picking up shells, afternoon naps, playing in the sand with the kids, and drinking some wine in the evenings.

Until we return!!!
